Antenatal Care

Private Midwives provide supportive and comprehensive antenatal care to low risk women planning to give birth at the birth clinic, hospital or at home. Registered Midwives are independent healthcare providers and consult or refer clients to hospital-based care as needed. From antenatal care to the birth and postnatally, your care will be complete.
Midwives use their own skills and other resources including; chiropractic care, acupuncture, naturopathy and referrals to back-up gynaecologistobstetricians to ensure your care is complete.

What you can expect at the Antenatal Consultations

  • Professional and personal antenatal consultations
  • Get to know the midwife and see if she is a good “fit” for you and your family
  • Learn about midwifery care and if your pregnancy is suitable for low-risk maternity care.
  • Learn about your options, home, hospital or birth clinic
  • Plenty of time to ask questions, discuss desires and expectations
  • Personal and culturally sensitive care
  • Education that pregnancy is a normal, healthy state
  • Generous information and resources
  • You are in charge of your care, so we provide true informed consent on all procedures and other options about your care
  • Regular risk assessment, including monitoring blood pressure, hands-on belly checks and baby’s heartbeat checks at every visit
  • Routine blood tests done during antenatal visits
  • Referrals for ultrasound and consultation to gynaecologists/obstetricians as needed

General frequency of visits

  • Start care as early in pregnancy as you like, most midwives advise around week 12
  • Monthly visits until approximately 28 weeks of pregnancy
  • Every two weeks until approximately 36 weeks of pregnancy
  • Weekly until 41(+) weeks of pregnancy
  • More frequent visits are available at any time for any reason

When your baby is due

  • Your due date at 40 weeks is really more of a due “zone”
  • You could give birth anytime from 37 weeks up to 42 weeks
  • First time moms often give birth closer to 41 weeks
